80’s Material Girl: 2024 Trends Alert
The self expression in fashion from the 80’s was one of the most exhilarating in the world of fashion. From the launch of MTV to blockbuster movies, this era of fashion indulged in this media shifting opportunity and took the world by storm with its over the top silhouettes, bold colors and introduction to athletics on the runways. And guess what, it’s time to tell a friend to tell a friend; it is reintroducing itself in 2024! With a modern twist to each style, we have been seeing the shift from 90’s styles making a comeback over the past few years, to a sprinkle of 80’s reintroduced in late 2023. On the Spring 2024 runways, we have seen designers such as Saint Laurent, Miu Miu and Dior immersing fully into this decade and we cannot wait to indulge it in ourselves. Let’s take a closer look at what pieces we can be pulling out of our capsule collections to immerse in the 80’s Material Girl style, or as we’re calling it now: mob wife aesthetic.
Mob Wife Aesthetic:
Taking a step away from the well loved “clean girl” aesthetic we’ve been indulging in over the past couple years with minimalism taking over the world of fashion and beauty, we’re seeing a major shift with bold textiles such as fur, statement colours incorporation, and tailored silhouettes reintroducing shape contrary to our oversized 90’s inspired pieces. Taking a massive step towards 80’s material girl, we want to think of expressive luxury. This trend is a reintroduction of statement pieces and textiles, whether it be in your accessories or clothing. Remember to keep it interesting through either texture, colour, or shape. Let’s dive deeper into each aspect of this collection.
Fur:
Nothing says bold luxury like fur, and this textile is one that is being heavily incorporated into mob wife aesthetic as the defining textile for this concept. When thinking of 80’s material girl, the first person that comes to mind is the one and only Miss Marilyn Monroe. We saw Marilyn Monroe wearing fur throughout the 80’s, primarily in forms of coats and scarves/shawls. We are taking that same inspiration into 2024 and wearing fur coats, vests, scarves, and hats, alongside incorporating it into dresses with fur trims along the sleeve cuffs, necklines and bottom hemlines.
C-Suit Chic:
This power suit focuses on a tailored fit with broad shoulders. The silhouette perfectly hugs the body, emphasizing the waistline but keeping things exciting by adding shoulder pads that we saw all throughout the 80’s. This combination of a powerful shoulder with a snitched waist gives the perfect dimension for having a balanced combination of feminine chic with bold and powerful. Although for now we’re only seeing shoulder pads making their comeback in form of c-suits, we wouldn’t be surprised to see them trickling their way into spring fashion with dresses and tops.
Red and Cobalt Blue Statement:
Taking a massive step back towards colour after a long run of neutral colour pallets the past few years, statement colours will be the route to reincorporate colour back into our wardrobes. We have been seeing red all over the runways and social media in forms of accessories and clothing articles. Alongside red, we are also seeing cobalt blue making a major appearance. Both these colours can be incorporated into items such as shoes, bags, belts, jackets, sweaters, the list goes on. So take your pick, are you going towards a warm tone statement, or cool tone?
Large Bags:
Big slouchy bags are going to be all the rage this year, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to fit all my necessities in my bag again. Putting our love for mini shoulder bags aside from the 90’s and early 2000’s, we are going back to our roots and bringing large bags back into style. The key to modernizing this accessory will be by keeping quiet luxury in mind. In other words; logo mania is out. This is where we are still holding on to timeless minimalism by steering away from big logos and brand names all over our pieces, and focusing on the material and quality. My current obsession? The Polène Cyme bag made with the most luxurious Italian textured calf leather.
Off the Shoulder Necklines:
This trend is where modesty meets a subtle alluring touch. With the exposed shoulders, this feminine style elevates the most minimal to extravagant pieces by adding a sultry chic element to tops and dresses. This neckline is seen in various textiles to cater from everyday pieces to elevated, and to transition from fall/winter into spring/summer. It is very important to have the right jewelry with this neckline; styled with a crystal, pearl or diamond choker you will without a doubt be a crowd-pleaser with front page worthy style.
Sequinned Everything:
Sequin was THE textile of the 80’s with their approach to bold, daring and over the top fashion. Drama was the core of this style and it’s made a major comeback. This past holiday season, we saw this trend everywhere. From runways to ready to wear, this bold textile was seen on pieces ranging from dresses to accessories, and it’s here to stay. Whether it’s a subtle touch from Elizabeth Laurent, or full on glitz and glamour, this textile will ensure to create a bold statement in any room. With it’s modern shift, it’s not only being styled for the perfect night out in form of dresses, but also casually in form of maxi skirts with t-shirts, button-ups and blazers.
Bows:
Calling all girly-girls: it’s your time to shine. Bow are a diverse trend being incorporating in a large variety of categories, ranging from accessories to clothing. We are seeing bow details in jewelry pieces, hair accessories, clothing, and even into shoes! This feminine touch is a simple yet eye catching way to elevate any simple outfit and feel instantly put together.
Leopard Print:
Saving the most bold for last, we have leopard print. This statement print is for all my fashion girlies out there that enjoy playing around with exciting prints and textiles. Although a bold statement, this trend is not one to shy away from with the diverse techniques to style it and easily incorporate it into a casual or elevated outfit. Remember, it’s all about how you style the outfit that makes all the difference.
